Brass and Bones: How did three ,200 brothers start a million company?

The three siblings, with no previous work experience, made over $1 million after launching a jewelry brand from home.

Kate Richie, 26, Chloe Ritchie, 24-year-old from Brisbane, and Nicholas Manukau, 33, started making colorful earrings as a fun addition before turning them into the “Brass and Bone” brand.

Today, the brand is known for its earrings that mimic the look of miniature everyday items such as Vodka Cruiser bottles, Chupa Chups, and UNO cards.

The idea was born when Kate, after returning from a trip to Japan, noticed the lack of shiny and unique earrings in Australia.

Since its launch in August 2019 and investing $1,200 in the idea, the brand has generated $1,047,603 in revenue.

Chloe told Daily Mail Australia that the trio tested the market before entering the market and invested a small portion of their savings to reduce the risk factor.

“We made a pair of earrings, advertised on Facebook groups, and made $1,900 in the first month – the response was great,” Chloe said.

“In the beginning we didn’t have any goals, we just wanted to do something fun in our spare time.

Sales started from the first month

“We learned everything we know about doing business and making earrings by watching YouTube videos,” Chloe said.

It only took a month for the brand to work, including taking inventory and building a website.

From the first month, sales began to “snowball” and the brothers decided to introduce new original designs.

Last year, the brand spent $25,000 in just six hours to sell all hand-labeled Vodka Cruiser bottle earrings for $19.95 a pair.

The trio admitted they were overwhelmed by the 1,253 orders that needed to be packed and shipped, but were grateful for the support.

They said it takes time to pay attention to the details on the earrings and each object must be perfectly sculpted.

The company is expected to generate more than $500,000 in revenue this fiscal year.

All three brothers grapple with various mental health issues but still manage to build a successful business.

Both Chloe and Kate agreed that the brand helps keep anxiety and ADHD at bay.

The three brothers enjoy working for themselves and have learned to communicate on a corporate level.
