Magda Szubanski has revealed she was just as shocked as the rest of us when Heath Ledger planted a kiss on her lips in this now infamous viral video from 2006.
At this year’s AFI Awards, the comedian, who played Sharon Strzelecki from the hit ABC comedy Kath & Kim, approached Heath mid-interview before spontaneously planting a long hug on her lips.
On Sunday, the 61-year-old responded to a person on Twitter who asked her about the video: “Was it a set up @MagdaSzubanski? At least a joke between friends?”

‘Nup! Heath had NO idea! but he was such a brilliant actor that he improvised spectacularly!!’ She responded in a tweet.
Heath’s interaction inspired a Kath & Kim story that unfortunately never materialized.
The actress told TV Week that Heath almost played a stalker in pursuit of her iconic Sharon Strzelecki character on the ABC comedy series.

The guest role was first discussed in 2006, just two years before the Oscar winner’s tragic death at the age of 28.
The day after their red carpet hug, the Two Hands star called Magda with a proposal.
“He had so much fun that he wanted to talk about a Kath & Kim storyline where he would become Sharon’s stalker,” said the three-time Logie winner.

Just two years later, in 2008, the Perth-born star tragically died of a drug overdose.
“It would have been great if he was on the show,” Szubanski regretted.
Heath died on January 22, 2008 in a New York City apartment of an accidental drug overdose after months of physical and mental exhaustion.
