“Prisoner of the Caucasus” is no longer the same: what names were given to Gaidai’s films abroad

It was not always possible to understand what was being said.

Foreigners once renamed domestic tapes as best they could. They also inherited the film masterpieces of director Leonid Iovich Gaidai. Sometimes there was no trace of the original name.

So, the picture “Prisoner of the Caucasus” oddly enough turned into “The Virgin to be steal”. It was in this translation that it was shown to viewers in Italy. The film fared slightly better in Hungary and the UK. There he was given the names “The Bride in the Bag” and “Caucasian Style Kidnapping”.

But with regard to the tape “Operation” Y “and other adventures of Shurik,” foreign film distributors did not really bother. In Sweden, it was translated as “Operation Laughter,” says KP.
