‘I didn’t know his music!’: Helen George reveals she worked as a backing singer for Elton John when she was a student but didn’t ‘appreciate’ the opportunity’

Helen George admitted she was unfamiliar with Elton John’s music when she worked for him as a backing singer.

The Call The Midwife actress, 38, revealed she was scouted for an event in 2005 while studying musical theater at the Royal Academy of Music.

The Rocketman hitmaker studied at the same school when he was 11.

Error? Helen George has admitted she “knew nothing” about Elton John’s music when she performed as a backing singer for him during her university days.

But despite the big occasion, Helen, then 21, said she “didn’t appreciate” being on tour with the star and just had a “brilliant time.”

Speaking to Tom Allen on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky, Helen shared: ‘[Elton] went to the Royal Academy of Music and I trained at the Royal Academy of Music and he took some singers and musicians on tour with him.

“It was very nice of him and I was only 21, didn’t really know or appreciate Elton John’s music and was just having a good time.

“Now I look back and think: why don’t I fangirl over him? He was great and now I listen to his music religiously.”

Helen has since starred in a video for Birdy’s 1901 cover and also showed off her voice when she appeared on the BBC 75th VE Day special at Buckingham Palace.

Now she is ready to take the stage as Anna in The King and I’s upcoming UK tour, which starts at the Marlowe Theater in Canterbury in February.

Discussing the iconic role, she said: “I’m over the moon, it’s such a big role. I never thought I could play it and they offered it to me and I said ‘of course I can. I don’t say no!’ It’s one of the best roles in musical theater ever.”

However, Helen is best known for her role in the medical drama Call The Midwife.

Her characters Trixie Franklin and Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) got their happy endings when they got married on the show.

It’s because Helen George and Olly Rix once looked like happy newlyweds while filming the new season of Call The Midwife in November.

Olly has previously admitted that when he meets fans, he’s often more interested in berating him than swooning.

While they love his character – Matthew Aylward, the rich, handsome landlord who swept Sister Trixie Franklin off her feet and supported the financial security of the Nonnatus House of Midwives – they also fear he will be the next guy. leaving Trixie sad.

The BBC drama returned on Christmas Day with a Christmas special and Season 12 launched on New Year’s Day.
