Castillo de Arcos castle in Spain listed for 7.9m euros

Castillo de Arcos de la Frontera, a historic 11th-century castle in Andalusia, Spain, has gone on sale for 7.9 million euros. The landmark property has been listed through the luxury real estate company Sotheby's, marking the first time the estate has been offered on the market since 1922.

The fortress spans 5,300 square meters and is currently owned by the Marquess of Tamarón, Santiago de Mora-Figueroa. The sale was first reported by the Daily Mail newspaper.

Situated in the town of Arcos de la Frontera within the southern Spanish province of Cádiz, the structure stands on a cliff peak overlooking the Guadalete River. Arcos de la Frontera is renowned as one of the prominent white towns of Andalusia, famous for its dramatic clifftop positioning and steep historic streets.

Historic palace architecture and grounds

Originally constructed in the 11th century as a military fortress, Castillo de Arcos was transformed during the 14th century into a residential palace for the Dukes of Arcos. High outer walls surround the property, concealing a complex of inner courtyards and gardens designed to provide quiet privacy in the center of the town's historic district.

The central axis of the estate features a large landscaped area framed by myrtle hedges and tall cypress trees. A second arched courtyard further highlights the residential layout of the palace grounds.

Inside, the castle contains 60 rooms in total, including 12 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. Key interior features include a 25-meter library, vaulted ceilings, and an elevated terrace offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Over the past century, the property has undergone careful restoration to preserve its original historical appearance.

Visitor access and public reaction

Although Castillo de Arcos remains privately owned and is generally closed to the public, open days are hosted four times every year. Visitors and tourists frequently gather outside the perimeter to view the clifftop fortress from the surrounding pathways.

Public reviews reflect strong interest in the estate. One visitor wrote on Google Reviews that discovering such hidden gems along the journey was exciting enough to prompt thoughts of moving to the area, noting that continuing further down the path revealed additional sights. Another reviewer described the castle as an exceptionally beautiful location that mirrors the appeal of the wider town.

Other European castles on the market

The listing follows other notable historic property sales across Europe. In Hamburg, Germany, Henneberg Castle was recently put up for sale with a guide price of 1.1 million euros. The 19th-century Neo-Gothic structure, constructed between 1884 and 1887 on an artificial 15-meter rocky hill along the Alster River, is widely recognized as the smallest castle in the world. It was originally built by postal official Albert Henneberg as a retirement residence and to fulfill his wife's dream of owning a castle.

Elsewhere in southern Europe, property owners in the Tuscany region of Italy have introduced an alternative arrangement, offering free accommodation in historic villas to caretakers willing to manage and maintain the estates during the owners' absence.
