Local residents in the Turkish port city of Çanakkale found an unexploded artillery shell floating near a public beach in Kepez village, CNN Türk reported.
Bystanders noticed the metallic object holding on the surface of the water off the coast. At the scene, police promptly cordoned off the area and implemented necessary security measures.
According to a preliminary theory, the ammunition may be connected to the Dardanelles Operation, also known as the Çanakkale Campaign, from World War I. Police officers seized the shell and brought it to the Kepez police station for further examination to establish its exact origin.
In an earlier incident in Turkey, four people died in a tourist bus crash in Isparta province. Preliminaries indicated that the driver lost control on the highway, causing the bus to run off the road into a ditch and overturn.
