A British man named Chris has become a millionaire after regaining access to 61 bitcoins that were frozen on an exchange over a decade ago.
According to news outlet VnExpress International, the digital assets are valued at approximately 4.76 million dollars following a recent legal settlement.

Chris originally invested 1,500 pounds in Bitcoin in 2011 while studying as a university student. He purchased the cryptocurrency through Intersango, a British exchange platform. By 2014, his holdings had grown in value to around 4,000 pounds. However, the platform encountered operational difficulties that year and ceased operations, leaving his account completely frozen.
The sudden loss came as a severe shock to Chris, who said he had no desire to lose his savings. Over the following years, he watched the market value of Bitcoin rise dramatically. He explained that seeing the cryptocurrency skyrocket felt like a punch in the gut, which eventually led him to stop tracking exchange rates altogether because he believed his funds were lost permanently.
Early Investment and Lost Access
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency launched in 2009 that operates on a peer-to-peer blockchain network. In 2011, during the early days of cryptocurrency trading, digital coins were sold for only a fraction of their current values. Retail investors purchased digital assets through early trading exchanges like Intersango, which was among the early platforms operating in the United Kingdom.
Unlike modern financial institutions, early cryptocurrency platforms often operated without formal regulatory oversight. When operational difficulties or corporate closures occurred, users frequently found their accounts locked and their digital wallets inaccessible.
In 2018, Chris received emails from former founders of Intersango requesting that he contact them regarding the exchange. Fearing that the messages were part of an online scam, he deleted them without responding. His frozen holdings remained untouched for several more years.
The situation changed in early 2026 when his wife persuaded him to make another attempt to recover the money. Chris hired CEL Solicitors, a local law firm specializing in cryptocurrency asset recovery.
Legal Recovery and Future Plans
Specialized law firms in the digital asset sector assist clients in tracing blockchain transactions, navigating corporate insolvencies, and conducting negotiations to reclaim locked funds from defunct exchanges.
Following the settlement of the case, Chris successfully regained full access to his 61 bitcoins. On September 3, with Bitcoin trading at around 78,000 dollars per coin, his recovered portfolio reached an estimated value of 4.76 million dollars.
Despite his successful recovery, Chris acknowledged that he continuously checks his account out of lingering fear that he might lose access again. He plans to sell a portion of the bitcoins to purchase a home for his mother, host a celebration party, and take his family on vacation.
The recovery of frozen cryptocurrency accounts remains uncommon, as lost access credentials or bankrupt platforms frequently lead to permanent financial loss. In a separate case, an Irish drug dealer lost 6,000 bitcoins after a cleaner accidentally threw away the document containing his wallet access codes, leaving the funds permanently inaccessible.
