The Colombian Geological Service recorded eight minor earthquakes across Colombia on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with tremors striking the departments of Choco and Santander. The seismic events ranged in magnitude from 2.0 to 3.1 on the Richter scale, occurring throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Most of the tremors were concentrated near Istmina and Sipi in Choco department, while Los Santos in Santander department experienced two separate seismic shocks. Monitoring officials confirmed that no damage or injuries were immediately reported following the events.

Recent Seismic Activity

The strongest event of the day occurred in Los Santos, Santander, at 12:48 p.m. local time. The Colombian Geological Service recorded the tremor at a magnitude of 3.1 with a depth of 150 kilometers, located at latitude 6.82 degrees north and longitude -73.17 degrees west. Earlier in the morning at 7:19 a.m., Los Santos registered a magnitude 2.1 quake at a depth of 141 kilometers, located at latitude 6.81 degrees north and longitude -73.17 degrees west.

In Choco department, Sipi experienced two quakes during the day. A magnitude 2.5 earthquake struck Sipi at 7:51 a.m. at a depth of 41 kilometers, located at latitude 4.61 degrees north and longitude -76.65 degrees west. Later at 12:55 p.m., a magnitude 2.9 tremor hit Sipi at a depth of 58 kilometers, located at latitude 4.47 degrees north and longitude -76.64 degrees west.

Istmina in Choco recorded four separate earthquakes on Saturday morning. The series began at 5:32 a.m. with a magnitude 2.4 earthquake at a depth of 48 kilometers, located at latitude 4.47 degrees north and longitude -76.70 degrees west. That was followed by a magnitude 2.5 tremor at 6:41 a.m. at a depth of 43 kilometers, located at latitude 4.46 degrees north and longitude -76.71 degrees west.

A third quake hit Istmina at 8:18 a.m. with a magnitude of 2.0 at a depth of 40 kilometers, located at latitude 4.50 degrees north and longitude -76.72 degrees west. The final recorded tremor in Istmina occurred at 12:36 p.m. with a magnitude of 2.7 at a superficial depth, located at latitude 4.43 degrees north and longitude -76.77 degrees west.

Seismic Monitoring Network

The Colombian Geological Service operates a complex monitoring system spanning the country. As a century-old science and technology entity attached to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the agency conducts basic and applied subsoil geoscientific research. Its duties include assessing resource potential, evaluating geological hazards, managing geoscientific knowledge, and controlling nuclear and radioactive activities under national government policy priorities.

The monitoring network comprises 339 seismic stations stationed across Colombian territory and near active volcanoes. The National Seismic Network operates 206 of these stations to cover the national mainland. An additional 133 seismic stations are installed on active volcanoes and are continuously monitored through three volcanological and seismological observatories.

Tectonic Setting and Historical Context

High seismic activity is common in Colombia because of its location in the northwestern corner of South America. Three major tectonic plates meet in this region: the South American, Nazca, and Caribbean plates. Their continuous movement creates significant geological strain throughout the subsoil.

Colombia also forms part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically active zone spanning approximately 40,000 kilometers around the Pacific Ocean. The region is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity caused by subduction zones where tectonic plates, such as the Nazca plate, collide with continental masses.

Geologists define a seismic event as the sudden breaking of rocks within the interior of the Earth. This sudden release of energy produces waves that travel through the ground, creating noticeable movement on the surface. Technical terms such as earthquake, tremor, seismic event, and telluric movement are synonyms, though in Latin America the word earthquake is reserved for destructive events that cause casualties.

Geologists also track periods of seismic silence, which occur when a region experiences an extended absence of significant seismic activity. Such periods can indicate the gradual accumulation of tectonic strain, increasing the potential risk of a larger future earthquake. The strongest earthquake ever recorded in Colombia occurred on January 31, 1906, off the Pacific coast of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, and Tumaco, Colombia, reaching an estimated moment magnitude of 8.8.

Safety Protocols and Emergency Instructions

Scientific experts emphasize that earthquakes cannot be predicted in advance. No technique exists anywhere in the world to determine the exact time an earthquake will strike, although scientists can identify spatial regions where seismic activity is likely to occur over time.

Safety guidelines explicitly warn against using elevators during a tremor or earthquake. Specialists advise that elevators can detach from their structural mountings and fall from great heights while carrying passengers inside. During major events, authorities also instruct the public to avoid making cellular or landline phone calls to prevent network congestion, recommending text messages instead.

If official tsunami warnings are issued or if sea waters visibly recede along the coast, residents must immediately evacuate toward higher ground, flood-free zones, and designated assembly points. Individuals who cannot reach high ground should climb to an upper floor or the roof of a sturdy building structure.

Emergency Kits and Helplines

Authorities advise households to maintain a fully stocked emergency backpack. Essential items include basic hygiene products, a first aid kit equipped with bandages, gauze, alcohol, medication, and hydrogen peroxide, along with warm clothing and cash. The kit should also store non-perishable food such as canned tuna, cereal bars, chocolates, and nuts, beside communication tools and specific supplies for infants, women, and the elderly.
