There have always been beauty myths that have been passed down from one generation to the next and have little reality. Urban legends say that if you cut your hair, it grows faster; if you pull out a gray hair, more will come out or toothpaste will fight acne. This is happening more often now with the internet and social networks like TikTok. There are countless beauty hacks that have become fashionable, but they may not be absolute truths.. Paula Begoun, one of the industry’s biggest gurus, sheds some light on some of them.
Known as the police of cosmetics, Begoun has written a total of 22 books on beauty, many of them so famous that he has up to ten editions. All the product information in their books in 2005, online at Beautypedia. And right now, that’s where it updates the information.
Beauty firm Paula’s Choice has been successful since its launch, and it’s finally arriving in Spain this 2022. Taking advantage of this involvement in the Spanish market, we spent some time talking to her about what she knows how to do best: debunking beauty myths.
“I don’t believe in anything when it comes to skincare,” she says.
1. Massage helps ingredients absorb better
According to the expert, if you massage, you move the skin and help with gravity. “If you stretch constantly, the elastic and collagen fibers will stretch and break. They’re like rubber bands.”
It ensures that there is nothing useful in the massage, it does not help the absorption of the components. This happens because of only two things: the molecular size of the products and the ingredient delivery systems. “Not all products are designed to be absorbed, some need to stay on the surface to protect the skin. jade rollers These are a waste of time and money.”
2nd. skin rollers and micro needling beneficial
“The type 3 collagen that forms when the skin heals after these treatments is not the best for being nice and smooth. The same goes for harsh exfoliants”Explain. “I’m not talking micro needling done by dermatologists or plastic surgeons” explain.
3. ‘skin pulling’ good for skin
The TikTok trend promises to use a concealer like Vaseline at night to create a physical layer on the skin that helps protect and renew it. Paula assures that Vaseline isn’t a bad ingredient because it’s moisturizing, but using it alone doesn’t do anything to protect the skin because it doesn’t contain any penetrating ingredients like antioxidants or peptides. “It starves the skin. If you have super dry skin, it may be an option after applying your active ingredients, but using it alone is not enough”clarifies.
4. Natural ingredients are better than chemicals

“It’s ridiculous to think about it. There are good and bad chemicals. Chemical is not an ugly word.”, Explain. Paula says the best products use a combination of chemical and natural ingredients, and there are those who can’t get the same. Finally, she adds, content trends are ridiculous because there isn’t enough research behind new content. “For example, plant-based growth factors are ridiculous because plants don’t have skin. That’s marketing.”
5. You should change the beauty products according to the seasons

“You only need to change the products of your beauty routine if they change your skin”says Paula. “It doesn’t matter where you are”Add. “If at a certain moment your skin feels drier, you should change your moisturizer to a slightly thicker one, but don’t change everything else or vice versa. If you’re feeling oily in the summer, switch to a lighter moisturizer”.
And skin doesn’t change with age either. “I’m almost 70 years old and my skin is still fat“Explain, “You should treat the skin you have, not how old you are”Add, “The same ingredients work at any age.”
