Skin is not fashion, the new awareness campaign from AEDV

under the motto Skin is not fashion, it is health, the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) creates a line of fictitious synthetic skin accessories for various poorly diagnosed and treated skin conditions. The aim of this campaign is to raise public awareness of the importance of diagnosis and the confidence that a dermatologist will take care of their skin, both for aesthetic and health concerns.

Skin is not a supplement you can change

Imagine that at birth you were given only a coat, some shoes, a shirt for life. Wouldn’t you give them the utmost care, wouldn’t you pamper them, wouldn’t you rely on experts to fix them? This is exactly what happens to your skin. We are born with only one skin and it is for life and the skin is one of the most important organs of our body, it is the first shield of protection, it is the reflection of our health; and it is natural beauty. Because there is nothing more beautiful than healthy skin.

This is the AEDV’s message to society, an awareness message about the importance of skin and its care. Our skin is not a fashion that we can change whenever we want, our skin is forever and we should always entrust it to expert dermatologists. Skin is not fashion, it is health.

“The dermatologist is the specialist in the disease and damage to skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. In our function, we also ensure disease prevention, health promotion and health education. In this context, we have included an awareness campaign for the population, who we have mentioned that skin is not fashion, because the population often treats their skin as if it is a fashion item without being aware that we only have one skin that is for life and that this mistreatment of this important organ can have important and serious health consequences, some of which are very serious,” emphasizes Dr Agustín Viera, Director of Communications at the AEDV.

“In the motto The skin is not fashion, it is health, we incorporate many of the ideas we want to convey. Primarily the importance of the skin, it is the largest organ of our body, active, dynamic and changing, which not only protects us from the outside but also connects us with our environment, personal, work, cultural, social , playful , intimate. The skin performs many functions and the correct performance of these functions depends on its condition. Functions of protection, active defense, secretion, temperature regulation, activate vitamin D, produce melanin, it is a sensitive organ, not just an aesthetic organ. Leather is not fashion because it is truly unique and forever. We can’t change it. The skin is not fashion, but it is health, because it also reflects our state of health, our inner world, our health, how we feel and take care of ourselves, skin health is a state of well-being that goes far beyond illness and our purpose as dermatologist is to ensure that people achieve this state of well-being that allows us to achieve healthy skin that is also aesthetic skin. Ultimately, the idea of this campaign came about because we were looking for a certain visual analogy that would allow to explain, through examples, certain types of ideas, each of the fashion items conveys a message, a reality to be improved, a health problem and a form that the dermatologist has to deal with this health problem,” adds the expert.

“The dermatologist currently diagnoses and treats about 3,000 processes or diseases of skin and hair. For us, the diagnosis is fundamental, it is the key. Diagnosis always before treatment. If a correct diagnosis is not made, we can lead to a poorer approach to the treatment of the disease and a poor outcome for the skin. With this campaign we want to emphasize the importance of diagnostics. The skin is an external, visible organ and that allows us to make very early and very accurate diagnoses. The fact that it is so external may prompt treatment before it reaches something more serious. Dermatology has evolved a lot, it has become a very decisive specialty. A large part of the problems we encounter are solved within the day. With medical, surgical or infiltration processes. At the same time, it is a very precise specialty, both in diagnosis, we have epiluminescence techniques, ultrasound, artificial intelligence, microscope, as in treatment, surgery controlled with a microscope, laser, biological treatment, etc. Really everything is precision and resolution ability has a lot to do with the diagnosis. In this campaign, we have developed a series of fashion items, and each item is here to try and convey a lesson based on the importance of diagnosis: the melanoma shoe speaks about the importance of diagnosis before treatment, the rosacea cardholder speaks on the importance of this comprehensive diagnostic-therapeutic approach to the process that previously understood that there was no solution and that we now offer many solutions, the battered acne shoe speaks of the importance of early diagnosis and early and personalized treatment, the carcinoma bag speaks of the Importance of differential diagnosis: In the eyes of a dermatologist, something that looks like something else to other eyes is not. The sanding bag speaks about the importance of skin sign language. The skin speaks and transmits a series of signals to us that tell us what condition it is in, which allows us to make a diagnosis. Even when it is treated, it responds to the treatment in a certain way and that allows us to know the evolution of this treatment. The skin speaks to us through a language of signs that are often manifestations of internal changes. The skin can be changed by external aggressions or internal changes that are often the beginning of any diagnosis. If we observe the skin, we can find deeper diseases,” concludes the expert.
