How to care for your skin during the heating season? 5 important rules

As much as we love autumn for its atmospheric greyness, the opportunity to turn on the saddest songs on the playlist and finally feel like Bella from Twilight, there’s one thing. The beginning of autumn is always associated with the heating season and dry indoor air. Therefore, the skin loses moisture faster than normal, dries out and becomes less elastic.

A sure sign of lack of moisture in the epidermisfeeling of tension. However, small wrinkles appear and slight peeling may occur on the surface.

If you do not want to spend all three months of autumn with this feeling, we asked dermatologist and NAOS expert Igor Patrin how you should care for your skin in the hot season and what rules you should follow.

In this case, even familiar cosmetic products can cause tingling, and even the most modest skin can become sensitive.

But it’s important to understand that sensitivity is a temporary skin condition, not a type. It may develop due to improper care or weather conditions, but most importantly, it disappears. To do this, it is enough to follow a few care rules.

Restoration and protection are the two pillars of healthy skin in autumn. Only a few questions remain: how will it be restored and from whom or what will you protect it? Let’s go in order.

In other words, when the barrier properties of the skin are impaired, our main task is to restore them. This process can be divided into two stages: hydration and nutrition. Moisturizers will help retain moisture in your skin cells. Nutritious ones, on the other hand, support resistance to external stress factors.

Moisturizing ingredients primarily include those that can bind water molecules due to their structure. For example, hyaluronic acid, glycerin or panthenol.

Vegetable oils are among the ingredients necessary to nourish the skin. For example, jojoba oil. But often the formula of an ideal product is a cocktail of different ingredients that not only moisturize, nourish, but also protect the skin.

Another of our duties is to protect the skin from negative factors to preserve its barrier.

Aggressive factors are not only dry indoor air. Many times, flaking and dry skin can be made worse by improper care. For example, using products that contain high concentrations of retinol or essential oils. Even if the skin received these ingredients normally just yesterday, when it shows signs of dryness, it is better to temporarily abandon such cosmetics and switch to products labeled “for sensitive skin”. They will protect our epidermis from external aggressive factors.

Healing and protection aren’t everything. It is important not only to properly care for your skin, but also to avoid aggressive factors that can damage its barrier. That’s why we give the word to a dermatologist.

For cleansing, choose products labeled “for sensitive skin” or for dry (atopic) skin. They contain ingredients that gently cleanse while protecting the natural skin barrier.

Hot water breaks down lipids in the skin and can cause dryness and flaking. It is recommended to choose a water temperature of 32-35 degrees.

We cannot regulate the temperature outside, but we can provide ourselves with an ideal climate at home. The optimal temperature for the room is 20-22 degrees. You can humidify the space around you using a special device that saturates the air with moisture.

It is important to protect your skin from the inside as well as from the outside. Therefore, include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants in your diet.

During the heating season, moisturizing creams and serums are best applied to damp skin. This will help retain more moisture in the epidermis. Moreover, you need to apply these products 15-30 minutes before going out so that they are absorbed and the skin does not crack.

The best option for skin care during the heating season is a product that moisturizes, nourishes and protects at the same time. My latest find in this category is Bioderma’s dry body oil.

It was called “dry” because of its very necessary superpower – it is quickly absorbed and leaves no traces on the skin. Dry oil works silently but very effectively, just like a ninja. It deeply nourishes and moisturizes, gradually the skin becomes smooth and soft and peeling disappears. Applying oil to a steamed body after a shower is a pleasure. Thanks to its light texture, it gently wraps the skin. And the process of self-care becomes similar to aromatherapy – the oil has a light floral scent that you will want to feel on yourself for as long as possible.
