Winter surprised us before we had time to renew our hair after summer. Low temperatures and cold winds affect not only the health of the facial skin (which we regularly care for) but also the health of the hair. We asked Lyudmila Sokolova, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, trichologist at the Idealist preventive medicine clinic, how you should care for your strands in winter so that they remain beautiful and shiny.

What should be changed in hair care in winter?
In winter, strands become drier and brittle. Therefore, our primary task is to protect the integrity of the hair cuticle. It acts as a natural barrier, so when damaged, water in the hair evaporates easily and the hair becomes drier.
Balms and masks help protect the cuticle. They also add shine to the hair. Therefore, it is worth adding nourishing masks with natural oils to your care in winter. And use them 2-3 times a week.

Also in winter it is better to either forget about the hair dryer altogether, or use it at minimum power and temperature.
3 main rules
In the cold, your hair dries out as much as in the sun. They become dull and brittle, moisture loss occurs and the blood supply to the bulb is impaired.
To minimize the negative effects of cold, you need to follow some rules:
— Hiding your hair when going out. In this way, they will not be exposed to aggressive environmental effects such as wind and cold.
— Use conditioner. The product smoothes the hair surface by closing the cuticle scales and creates an invisible film on it that protects it from environmental influences.
— Wear a hat. And yes it is a must. Cooling the scalp causes vascular spasm and, as a result, deterioration in the nutrition of the hair. This increases the risk of deteriorating hair quality and hair loss. We talked in more detail here about the consequences of not wearing a hat in winter.
Which products should not be used in winter?
Hair styling products and hot styling devices (iron, curling irons) containing high amounts of alcohol and silicone have a negative effect on the hair.
Remember what you need to add to your winter hair care routine: leave-in serum (for additional nutrition of the hair), thermal protection (for protection when using a styler), exfoliation (to cleanse the scalp and activate hair growth), a comb made from natural materials (to prevent strands from becoming frizzy). .

How to care for dry scalp
Too aggressive shampoo, changing the frequency of washing your hair, ignoring the hat in winter – all this can lead to dry scalp and dandruff. By the way, here you will find complete instructions on how to prevent diseases.
For sensitive and dry scalp, it is better to use sulfate-free shampoos; These clean more gently. On the contrary, sulfate products are more suitable for fatty people. By the way, sulfates are stated as SLS or SLES in the shampoo formula.
