Ashford Castle in Ireland has been named the most beautiful hotel in the world in a global ranking compiled by travel publication Time Out.
The 800-year-old estate led a curated list of 33 spectacular hotels worldwide, with guests greeted right at the entrance gates by real Irish wolfhounds. Time Out travel experts personally visited every nominated venue, ranging from the California coast to the Costa Rican rainforest, before awarding the Irish property top honors.
In addition to overall victory, the 350-acre estate secured the title of best historical hotel. Ashford Castle has welcomed distinguished visitors since 1228, including celebrated 19th-century playwright Oscar Wilde and members of the Guinness brewing family. The historic estate is situated along the shores of Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland.
Historic luxury and secret gardens
Today, the castle operates as a luxury resort that maintains the refined atmosphere of an aristocratic residence following extensive restoration work. Inside, the property features a complex network of grand corridors, chandeliers crafted from Donegal crystal, and an indoor spa pool surrounded by sea shells. Guests also have access to a private cinema and hidden secret gardens on the grounds.
The internal layout of the building is so intricate that hotel staff personally escort every guest to their room upon check-in. Experts at Time Out noted that visitors should pay close attention to the route, as navigating back later can prove challenging. Bedroom interiors feature vibrant, bold colors, with most rooms offering scenic views across Lough Corrib. The resort becomes particularly picturesque during autumn, when morning mist floats over the lake and surrounding tree foliage turns golden.
Global competition and category leaders
Ashford Castle faced stiff competition from luxury destinations across the globe to secure the top spot. Second place in the global ranking went to Hiramatsu Karuizawa Miyota in Japan, praised by judges for its sweeping views of Nagano Prefecture in the mountainous Chubu region. Meanwhile, the title for the hotel with the most beautiful gardens was awarded to the Four Seasons in Florence, Italy.
Other notable category winners included Malta's Phoenicia hotel, recognized for having the best swimming pool, alongside 1 Hotel Mayfair in London and Le Pavillon de la Reine in Paris. The ranking also highlighted more unusual accommodation choices, such as an underground observation tunnel in South Africa and an eco-lodge in Costa Rica situated near one of only four tropical fjords in the world.
Global travel rankings
In separate travel findings released for 2026, Bangkok was named the best city in the world for nightlife. The Thai capital topped a survey of more than 24,000 local residents across 150 cities worldwide. Respondents evaluated the affordability of evening entertainment alongside how lively, diverse, and safe their city felt after dark, with over 70 percent of Bangkok residents rating their city's nightlife as good or excellent.
