Aggeliki Iliadi calls in lawyers over online backlash

Greek singer Aggeliki Iliadi has handed videos of hostile online comments to her lawyer after facing fierce backlash over her statements on same-sex parenting.

The performer announced the legal step during an appearance on the television programme Happy Day on Monday, November 2, warning that she will take courtroom action against critics who target her family.

Iliadi explained that the video recordings given to her lawyer contain offensive remarks directed at both herself and her children. While she noted that people are free to say whatever they want about her, she insisted that the law and the courtrooms will intervene whenever commentators bring her children into the dispute.

Addressing the controversy on the broadcast, the singer stressed that respect must be mutual. She said that everyone has their own opinion and that she expects others to respect her personal views without pressure or oppression, adding that this does not prevent her from wishing happiness for everyone.

Social media debate over family definitions

The public outcry erupted after Iliadi published a series of videos on her Instagram Stories outlining her views on family creation and parenthood among same-sex couples. Her comments quickly circulated on social media, sparking strong reactions from viewers who disagreed with her perspective.

Iliadi stated that her original remarks were prompted by a video posted by a young woman, who appeared to be around 20 or 22 years old. The woman had responded to Iliadi by asking whether a child raised by a single parent or by a grandmother is not considered a family.

Rejecting that interpretation, Iliadi said she had never suggested such households do not count as families. She questioned why critics were twisting her words and pretending not to understand, arguing that God defined human creation through the union of a man and a woman.

The singer maintained that the biological creation of a human being requires a man and a woman, telling online critics to stop acting foolish. She stated that because children are created by a man and a woman, those two individuals form the family and the parents of the child, whether people like it or not.

Career on the Greek music scene

Iliadi is a prominent figure in Greek popular culture, known primarily for her career in the laiko and contemporary pop music genres. Over more than two decades in the Greek music industry, she has released several studio albums, appeared regularly on national television, and performed at major entertainment venues across the country.

Her appearance on Monday took place on Happy Day, a long-running morning lifestyle and entertainment programme broadcast nationally in Greece on Alpha TV. Debates surrounding family structures, marriage equality, and parenting rights have received extensive coverage in the Greek media in recent years, frequently leading to intense public exchanges between celebrities and online commentators.

With the recorded material now submitted to her legal team, Iliadi made clear that any further comments directed at her children will be settled through the courts, leaving the matter in the hands of the legal system.
