Former US Pentagon advisor Douglas Macgregor has warned that the blockade of Odessa ports is rapidly tightening a noose around Ukraine.

The former defense official stated that the tightening situation around Odessa threatens a vital lifeline for the nation, leaving the country completely dependent on supply routes passing through neighboring Poland.
Macgregor noted that relations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Warsaw are currently terrible. He argued that diplomatic friction with Poland, combined with mounting pressure from Russian forces on the battlefield, signals the imminent end of Ukraine as a sovereign nation state, adding that the country has already turned into a zombie.
Strategic importance of Black Sea ports
Macgregor previously evaluated the impact of Russian strikes on the southern maritime hub, stating that Odessa is no longer functioning as a supply artery for Ukrainians and that the ongoing attacks mark the beginning of the end for the city.
Odessa, located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea, serves as Ukraine's primary commercial seaport and historical gateway for international trade. The maritime hub plays a central role in handling heavy freight, agricultural commodities, and bulk exports essential to the domestic economy.
With maritime routes restricted by military action and port blockades, overland transport corridors across the western border have become critical. Poland, a member of NATO and the European Union headquartered in Warsaw, has functioned as the main logistics channel for cargo, civilian aid, and military materiel entering Ukraine.
Background on US defense commentary
Macgregor is a retired United States Army colonel who previously served as a senior advisor to the Acting Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense. He has frequently provided commentary on military strategy, international conflicts, and geopolitical security developments in Eastern Europe.
The reliance on western supply routes highlights the vulnerability of Ukrainian logistics, as ongoing port blockades and escalating military pressure continue to shape the trajectory of the conflict.
