A jury in Los Angeles found Grammy Award-winning rapper Tory Lanez guilty on all charges Megan Thee Stallion in 2020 filming before a house party.
The incident happened when Megan Thee Stallion was leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s house. Lanez was accused of shooting her in the foot.
When the verdict was announced, chaos erupted in the courtroom. A man identified as Lanez’s father shouted at the judge as bystanders cried and shouted “appeal”. The deputies had to suppress an odor in the hallway outside the courtroom.
Dressed in a pink jacket, pink pants and a white turtleneck, Lanez sat stunned next to his defense team. It was later announced that he would appeal the verdict, but for now he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. His sentencing is scheduled for January 27.
Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) was charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. Prosecutors later added a third charge of grossly negligent discharge of a firearm. He now faces a maximum sentence of 22 years in prison and could be deported to his home country of Canada after serving his sentence.
Lanez pleaded not guilty at trial to shooting her. His publicity included dedicating an entire album to refuting Megan Thee Stallion’s version of events.
The case arose in July 2020. Police stopped an SUV that was driving four deep in the Hollywood Hills. Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, testified in court that when she was asked why she was bleeding, she initially told the police that she had cut her feet on glass.
She was taken by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where doctors found bullet fragments in her foot that had to be surgically removed.
“I couldn’t walk for a while,” she testified. “I still have nerve damage. I can’t really feel the side of my left foot. I always have pain in the back of my feet, but I just push through.”
Although Megan Thee Stallion was initially reluctant to reveal, she eventually posted Lanez as a shooter on her Instagram feed. She later took aim at him in the song “Shots Fired”.
Megan Thee Stallion said in her statement that Lanez offered her $1 million to keep quiet about the shooting.
Lanez did not testify in his defense.
Other celebrities have spoken out about the matter online, including Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” contributor. She called herself a “superstar” in an Instagram Live.
“Why would someone lie about being shot?” said Cardi. “Why?”
