Oasis (Arte) – Exploring Oman’s Hanging Gardens

Oman, a reign 80% of which is covered with desert, has vegetated villages perched in the mountains.

MICRO CLIMATE

Jebel Akhdar has 40 oasis villages in the mountains of Oman (“green mountain” in Arabic). People have succeeded in establishing abundance gardens on the edges of the rocks. This microclimate created by a dizzying altitude thus makes it possible to grow plants that are usually only found around the Mediterranean.

SAND ROSE

It is a ritual performed before sunrise. If the buds are left outside, the flowers are plucked to prevent them from wilting. This March morning Said is harvesting Damascus roses, the leaves of which are to be distilled, of Syrian origin.

PRECIOUS LIQUID

All this would be impossible without one essential element: water. All the oases of Jebel Akhdar run through hundreds of channels called falaj, which is literally “the place where the water circulates”. Birkat al Mouz’s also serves as a swimming pool for children. It is the oldest functioning falaj and has been roaming the streets and watering the crops below for 400 years.
