Moby: A decisive title with Indochine’s Nicola Sirkis

Electro superstar Moby is releasing a piece today with Indochina leader Nicola Sirkis and talks about his love for French artists.

How did you decide to record this single with Nicola Sirkis? What is the beginning of the story?

furniture : I heard your voice for the first time in the summer of 1987. I had a French girlfriend and we had moved to Paris. I remember an evening with him and his friends and exploring Indochina. Over the years I’ve heard more about what Nicola Sirkis does, her approach to music, her cultural references. About six months ago, someone told me that Nicola’s voice would fit my title. This Is Not Our World. That’s how the idea sprouted.

What does this title say about our current world?

Today we know that the Earth is not the center of the universe. Yet humans still cling to the idea that humans are the most important species on the planet. But humanity will only survive if we finally show respect for the other creatures living around us. If we continue to destroy their habitat, if we continue to destroy their lives, we will die.

Why do you love working with French artists so much?

While living in Paris I fell in love with French culture: literature, art, thought, cinema. Of course there are great things in our American culture, like David Lynch, South Park, John Lee Hooker, John Coltrane, Public Enemy, but unfortunately it is falling apart more and more…French artists inspire me.

Can you tell us more about your next collaboration with Mylène Farmer?

Mylène and I have a special story. When I first met him almost 20 years ago, I was from the country and I was ignorant. I had no idea what kind of superstar he was. She used to come to my restaurant in New York, she. I thought he was a nice French customer. Then one day, walking down the street in Paris, I saw a large poster of him. We’ve recorded a lot of different music for his next album and as far as I know he’s still working on it… I have absolutely no idea what he’s going to get out of the album.

Are there any other French artists you want to work with?

I’ve been trying to do something with Charlotte Gainsbourg for a while. I met him a long time ago but he is obviously very busy with his own projects. I did some remixes for Daft Punk and acted with Justice. The first French musician I met 30 years ago was Laurent Garnier. I was already making some music, but mostly I was the switchboard operator of a small record label. I answered the phone, cleaned the kitchen, went to the post office, and one day Laurent Garnier showed up unexpectedly because one of our records interested him. We became friends.

What Mylène Farmer and Charlotte Gainsbourg have in common is to perpetuate the mystery around them…

Basically I like people who can be mysterious because I’m not good at it. My mouth is huge!

Can you tell us more about your new hashtag, “Always centered at night”?

There is a lot of talk today about reconciliation in the world of music and entertainment in general and the United States in particular. Artists make music designed to reach a certain algorithm and reach as many people as possible. I said to myself: I either complain or I create a label that reflects my artistic values. My goal is to create interesting, beautiful and uncompromising music.
