Subway, work… merengue

When you think of the Dominican Republic, you think of the sun, the turquoise sea, and the coconut palms. It’s hard to imagine that there is a metro in the capital city of Santo Domingo (approximately 2 million inhabitants)! It was put into service in 2009 and has two lines serving thirty stations.

Between salt and sea

Very close to the beaches, in a place reminiscent of the Far West, a railway line runs between the sea and the salt flats. A small century-old locomotive passes by to collect salt, at a dizzying speed… 3 km/h. “He can go faster, the driver laughs. At 10 km/h, whenever he wants!”
