What drew you to the screenplay?
Isabelle Carre: Democratization of the kitchen during the period when the cooks worked in the castles. Suddenly, the pleasure of the table was no longer reserved for the nobility. And beyond that, there are echoes of our experiences: the success of cooking on television, the still limited place of women in this profession, the crisis of the yellow vests as we return…
Would you say your character Louise was a premature revolutionary?
Definitely ! It is he who pushed Manceron (Grégory Gadebois, editor’s note) to create his restaurant, it is he who gave it the ambition and the tools to succeed. It’s great that the movie was written by a man. I’m a feminist and I think it’s important to respect men that’s important.
The role reflects your dual origins. Have you thought about it?
Yes, and talking about it touches me. My mother was of aristocratic origin, and my father was the son of a railway worker. I did the splits every holiday season. Growing up in a diverse family was fascinating, the best education to be an actress.
The film celebrates those who dare to challenge the established order. What rebelled you today?
The political wait-and-see attitude and the responsibility of industrialists on pollution and the state of our planet. After the first quarantine, I was hopeful. We were talking about living differently, revising our model. But nothing changes. Jacques Chirac’s phrase “the house is on fire and we are looking elsewhere” is more meaningful than ever. I have a lot of anger I understand some moves like Extinction Rebellion. I think there is civil disobedience that makes sense for generations to come. I’m a mother of three, I’m worried about them.
Your second novel is out on the Indian side. What place does writing have in your life?
Journaling has become indispensable now. My third novel is with me, in my bag. In full pregnancy.
