Pat McAfee stands by his claim that an ESPN executive “tried to sabotage his show.”
The football commentator addressed his comments from Friday’s show in Monday’s episode The Pat McAfee Show, The first two hours will air on ESPN, followed by a third hour on ESPN+ and its YouTube channel.
“There were some comments about a particular person at ESPN that I just made on the YouTube and ESPN+ show,” McAfee said after praising ESPN for helping him cover the College Football National Championship . “Did a pretty good job.” “It didn’t even exist on linear television. I didn’t know anyone would hear it because it was only digital.”
McAfee aired his grievances on Friday’s episode against Norby Williamson, who was accused by the ESPN analyst of leaking information that paints “a narrative about what our program is.” As headlines surfaced over McAfee’s allegations, the former NFL player said he was “very disappointed” that Burke Magnus, ESPN’s content president, “made it look bad because of what I did and how I did it.”
“I want everyone to know: We love Burke Magnus,” McAfee added. “And I also love Jimmy Pitaro. Love [Disney CEO] Bob Iger.”
He continued: “But here there is quite a transition period between the old and the new. And the old people don’t like what the newcomers are doing.”
McAfee also responded to comments that he was “trying to get fired from the sports network,” saying, “Absolutely not!”
He also noted: “There are definitely people we don’t like and they don’t like us.” That’s how it will be and I don’t take back anything I said about that person. But the general story about us and ESPN, I think people need to remember that we’re strong, baby. And we all understand what the future looks like, there are just a few old timers who may not know it.”
ESPN previously issued a statement saying it would “handle this matter internally,” but did not comment on McAfee’s claims, adding that “no one is more committed to and invested in the success of the network.” as Williamson.
