Anthony Anderson teams up with his mother Doris Bowman, aka Mama Doris, in Fox’s latest competition series We are a family and he is excited (and possibly nervous) to hear what she has to say.
Anderson and Bowman replace Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne in the series, which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 3, from Fox Alternative Entertainment and Apploff Entertainment.
In the series, non-famous family members of celebrities perform duets with their hidden celebrity relative. It involves a studio audience made up entirely of 100 contestants who play several rounds of clues and games to win up to $150,000 each by correctly guessing which celebrity the artist is related to before they are revealed.

As you can see in the clip above, Doris doesn’t mince words or use proper names when speaking to Mariska Hargitay, star of Law and Order: SVU“Mariska heart attack”.
Anderson admits his mother has “no filter”. “On TV you have to take a very hard line, but my mother speaks from the heart and tells how things are going and how she sees them.” She might swear a lot more in real life when it comes down to it, but our chemistry is the same as on TV, and I think that’s what makes it so endearing. What you see is what our real lives are like, and this is our real relationship,” he told Deadline.
Despite her on-screen foibles, Anderson, who is hosting this month’s rescheduled Emmy Awards for Fox, seems to enjoy showing off his mother on television. “We are a family is about unknown family members who have talent, that’s exactly what my mom and I are about, except she has no talent and I’m the famous one in the family. On the show, these non-famous family members actually have talent, and being a part of it and seeing firsthand this incredible showcase of hidden talent is an experience I didn’t want to miss,” he added.
The series was created in-house by Fox Alternative Entertainment before being acquired by Apploff Entertainment alter ego Executive producer Matilda Zoltowski was hired to develop it. Jeff Apploff is behind much of Fox’s unscripted roster, incl Defeat Shazam, the spiritual samurai And Don’t forget the lyrics. He produces the show with former Fremantle director Joni Day, who joined the company last year, as well as Jamie Foxx and Zoltowski, who serve as showrunners.
Apploff said the chemistry between Anderson and Mama Doris is “one of the best 1-2 dynamics on television” and joked that Anderson is the “consummate conspiracy theorist” and therefore enjoys unraveling the clues himself.
He said he believed We are a family is the “perfect mix” of performance, comedy and acting.
“We are a family is different from any other game show because the audience doesn’t recognize the unsung heroes who will amaze everyone with their incredible talent, but we probably know their hidden celebrities, wrapped in our amazing atmosphere. The premise is incredibly fresh and fun because anything can be a clue,” said Apploff.
He calls it a “very different guessing game” as three celebrities are revealed each night compared to shows like The masked singerwith audiences having to wait an entire season to find out the identities of some celebrities.
Zoltowski added that music and celebrities are “central” to major entertainment programs. “We can all relate to the family aspect, so why not include that as well,” she said.
“We’ve developed different ways to play this game, from a single-player game to a celebrity panel show. We quickly discovered that multiple guesses from many different people gave us the widest range of funny guesses representing all possible viewpoints. Because you can’t predict how someone is going to put the clues together, there are nice surprises at every turn,” she added.
