‘Friends’ Crew Pay ‘Devastating’ Tribute to Matthew Perry;  Medster remembers the joy he brought

As thousands of tributes poured in to Matthew Perry at home following his death last Saturday, one of the simplest yet most moving tributes came from the team behind it Friendsthe sitcom that defined an era and made stars of Perry and his co-stars.

The official one Friends Account posted a simple photo of Perry on his Instagram account, along with the words:

“We are devastated to hear of the death of Matthew Perry. He was a true gift to us all. Our condolences go out to his family, his loved ones and all his fans.”

Meanwhile, co-star Maggie Wheeler – who portrayed Chandler Bing’s romantic interest Janice Hosenstein throughout the series with her breathy “Oh my God” voice – expressed her grief over Perry’s death:

“What a loss. The world will miss you, Mathew Perry (sic). The joy you brought to so many in your too short life will live on. I feel so blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

The actor was found dead in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home on Saturday. Media reported that first responders were called to a “water emergency” in the late afternoon. Perry reportedly played a game of pickleball before relaxing in his hot tub. A few days earlier, he had posted an idyllic photo of himself in the same spot – wearing headphones and looking out over the Hollywood Hills.

Tributes have been paid from around the world to the actor, who played Chandler Bing for ten seasons Friends. Perry became a household name alongside David Schwimmer, Matt Le Blanc, Jennifer Aniston, Courtenay Cox and Lisa Kudrow, but his memoir, published last year, revealed the personal burdens he carried while filming the series .

A jet ski accident in 1997 triggered an addiction to painkillers that culminated in a catalog of addictions. He wrote that he had been sober since 2001, except for “60 or 70 relapses”. While focusing on his own sobriety, he became a passionate advocate for greater compassion and understanding for drug offenders and opened his own sober house, The Perry House, in Malibu.
