TO UPDATE – Lewiston police told NBC News that at least 22 people are dead.
Law enforcement earlier confirmed that at least 16 people died and dozens more were injured after a bowling alley came under fire in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night. According to some reports, up to 50 people were injured.
According to police, reports of gunshots are circulating at other locations, including at a local bar.
No suspect is yet in custody. The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared a photo of the suspected shooter on Facebook Wednesday night and asked for help identifying him via Messenger or email.
Maine Governor Janet Mills posted on “I will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”
Reports of the shooting dominated prime time on cable news channels and BBC World News. On Fox News, a late night talk show Gutfeld! The priority was to increase coverage of the tragedy in Maine while Trace Gallagher anchored from Israel.
Earlier in the evening, ABC interrupted its regular programming with a special ABC News report.
Lewiston police wrote in a Facebook post that they are trying to identify 40-year-old Robert Card of Bowdoin as a person of interest. Police say he is considered armed and dangerous and the public is advised not to approach or make contact with him.
