When James Burrows was called the Spielberg of sitcom directors, Steven Spielberg wrote to him and said he wanted to be known as the James Burrows of film directors.

James Burrows, the son of renowned playwright, director and producer Abe Burrows, grew up in the industry but initially planned to have nothing to do with it. His behind-the-scenes work on Broadway led him to directing, and before he knew it, he was directing episodes of television’s most popular sitcom. The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
