It’s a nightmarish season for the Girondins de Bordeaux. The club is in last place in Ligue 1 with 28 points. While the relegation of David Guion’s team is not official yet, it’s like Bordeaux has a clearly unfavorable average difference (-41) over current play-off FC Metz (-29). The last day of the French championship, scheduled for Saturday, May 21.
“Late Football Club” (Canal+) consultant Alain Roche knows Bordeaux well. The former defender is a child of the club where he trained from 1985 to 1989 and 2000 to 2002 before playing there. Girondins: “From January, February we felt the first signs that things were not going well. People management was a disaster. It should be noted that in football it’s the players, sorry for the term, that get you out of this shitty situation. Even if you are not satisfied with some of them, you need to put them in the best conditions. We can’t say that it was like that throughout the season.“
Then Alain Roche criticized the management of the workforce by the Bordeaux administration: “Lots of recruits (15) who didn’t know the championship… Lots of loan players (8)… And highly professional executive players like (Laurent) Koscielny and (Benoît) Costil were kicked out.“Last winter, Bordeaux leaders terminated Laurent Koscielny’s contract on the pretext that the French international’s investment was not enough. For his part, Benoît Costil shared with the fans his cold, imminent wish to leave the Girondins.
The club has been experiencing major financial problems since Bordeaux was sold by the M6 group in 2018. While the team was close to administrative relegation last season, Gérard Lopez took over the Girondins in extremes. But the worries did not end. Between 2020-2021, Bordeaux’s sports director Alain Roche experienced his team’s dysfunction from within: “Last year (editor’s note in summer 2020), we weren’t able to recruit a single player. There were 15 players, so the financial problem was less. But at some point, it’s not just the incoming players who can get you out of a difficult situation. These are the players who love the club, belong to the club, and will do anything for a living. We have 8 players on loan. Are they psychologically prepared to save a club? I am not convinced.“On Saturday Bordeaux will wrap up the season by moving to Brest.
