"Things don’t line up for us" : Pierre Gasly’s final report after his retirement from the Hungarian Grand Prix

As Alpine was doubled off at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, July 23, Pierre Gasly shared his candid analysis of the French team’s performance…

The Formula 1 Grands Prix is one after the other and sadly for Alpine it looks the same. As with Great Britain on 9 July, the French team was abandoned twice at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, 23 July. From the first lap, just seconds after the start of the race, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon collided, leading to the retirement of the two cars. “We started very well; I didn’t have a lot of room so I had to go through the grass a little bit, but I was in a good position braking the first corner.‘, explains Pierre Gasly, channel+ about the incident with his teammate. “And then, I don’t know if it was Zhou or Daniel (Ricciardo) who hit Esteban but he hit me and broke our car… It’s just… Things are obviously not lining up for us, but unfortunately these are happening and we’re going to have to focus on Spa and quickly stop this series of events happening to us right now.

Bored, Pierre Gasly wants to move quickly again, with his eyes set on the Belgian Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, July 30: “We must keep working. I don’t think anyone is happy to be in these positions. We are all rivals and we all want to compete at the front, but we are not performing well enough at the moment. We showed it yesterday. We need to find more performances and I think everyone is motivated to get out of this series that we have now. We’re going to focus on the last race before the break and look for points for the team, because it’s more than unfortunate that both cars stopped in the first lap.

Esteban Ocon also did not hide his disappointment after this new humiliation from his team: “I’m disappointed that I’ve done so few laps, getting hit in the first corner is a result of starting so far in the herd, everyone is risking too much to gain ground, but hey, the race isn’t determined in the first corner so it’s a bit sad. We had plenty of room. I think then I would have taken the position, I would have skipped the car inside, with Pierre at the exit it would have been narrow but it would have been fine. (…) The images are clear, double abandonment for the team and disgusting. We’ll do it again next week, hoping to catch up and have a good final race before the break.

Alpine, who has been experiencing great difficulties in the Formula 1 world championship since the beginning of the season, ranks 10th in the drivers’ rankings with Esteban Ocon.to with 31 points, Pierre Gasly with 12 pointsto place with 16 points. In the builders’ championship, the French team is in 6th place.to With 47 points, it is far behind McLaren with 87 points.
