For Ellen Pompeo, a picture is worth a thousand words. The Grey’s Anatomy star, who has been quite cautious since the start of the strike initiated by the Screen Actors Guild-The Federation of American Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), has stepped out of reserve.
He really criticized Netflix by posting a meme taken from an episode of season 2 of the show where Meredith Gray is operating on a man with a bomb in his chest. The footage, originally posted on Netflix’s Tiktok account, shows Meredith standing with her arms crossed, and the text reads: “Me when a patient has a bomb in his chest”.
The actor reposted the image, adding it above this text: “Me too when @netflix no longer pays players. Hello. Let’s talk about it.”
Residual income is payments made to actors for each iteration of their movie or TV show. For projects licensed from publishers like Netflix or Hulu, the remaining rights paid to actors come from the studios that produced the show or movie, while Netflix pays the studio. But this deal, as it currently exists, is one of the main issues in the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. The unions also want publishers to pay their remaining wages to talent.
Several players talked about the issue, highlighting the low fees they receive from their streaming services. Mandy Moore claims that the sums she received from ‘This Is Us’ published on Hulu did not exceed a penny. Some stars of Netflix’s ‘Orange Is the New Black’ also talked about their low wages and income. Actress Kimiko Glenn shared a video of a royalty payment of $27.30.
Grey’s Anatomy was a hit for Netflix. Shonda Rhimes’ drama hit the top 15 on the list of biggest TV shows to watch in 2022 when all platforms combined. Thus, successes such as Criminal Minds, The Simpsons, and Seinfeld were surpassed… Last year, the series was watched more than 26.8 billion minutes.
