Rain Man (Arte): Is the movie starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman inspired by a true story?

Arte is showing Rain Man, one of the first films with the theme of autism and undertaken by the Tom Cruise-Dustin Hoffman duo, this Sunday evening…

Upon the death of his businessman father, Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), he discovers that he has an older brother who has been imprisoned for more than two decades at an autistic institution. Raymond (known as the Rain Man) is a fearful, autistic person who is completely withdrawn but has a great memory and extraordinary abilities. Eager to reclaim the fortune Raymond inherited and thought was his, Charlie takes his brother on an epic journey to California…

While the script for Barry Levinson’s movie remains fictional, the director was inspired by a man who actually existed and suffered from austime Asperger syndrome for the character played by Dustin Hoffman. This gave Kim Peek, an American who suffered from severe congenital brain damage, despite his motor and behavioral disorders, an incredible photographic memory or the ability to solve complex calculations in his head. On the other hand, as Rain ManKim Peek was unable to perform simple daily tasks such as getting dressed or understanding the intricacies of a joke… Considered a genius in many ways, Kim Peek died in 2022 after suffering a heart attack at the age of 58.

Rain Man can be watched on Arte on Sunday, July 16 at 21:00.
