The 63-year-old, nicknamed Fergie, revealed at the end of June that she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer during a recent routine mammogram, despite having no symptoms. The Sun underwent surgery and spent six days at the private King Edward VII Hospital in London.
Today, she is slowly recovering at home. A friend of the duchess said: “The surgery took eight hours and was more complicated than you might think. The message he wanted to convey today is that he is so grateful and feels so lucky to have the urge.”
A spokesperson for Fergie, mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, said her prognosis was good: “I was told that he had to have surgery and it went well”spokesperson said in a press release regarding his health condition.
Before adding: “The Duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have told her her prognosis is good. She is currently recovering with her family. The Duchess wishes to express her endless gratitude to all the medical staff who have supported her over the past few days.”
Her family rallied around her as she rested at the Royal Lodge, which she shared with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, Charles III’s brother.
As the Mail on Sunday explained, her daughter Eugenie welcomed a new baby on May 30, but that didn’t stop her mother from moving to the Royal Lodge to help her recover.
The Duchess of York has a very close relationship with her two daughters and grandchildren, whom she often speaks of fondly.
On Sarah’s podcast with her friend, entrepreneur Sarah Jane Thomson, the Duchess talked about Princess Beatrice’s strong bond with her daughter, Sienna. “He’s such a handsome little boy,” he also said of his new grandson, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank.
“It’s a great name,” he added. Ronnie was chosen as Ernest’s middle name after Sarah’s father, Ronald, and the Duchess explains that it was “very emotional”. “It made me cry,” he added.
