What is the origin of this short series?
Rebecca Manzoni: I’ve been thinking about this show for six years, but I needed to get the music rights to make it. And then it took time, because through the prism of women in pop history we diverted ourselves to the making of a cartoon to describe these hits and their actors.
How did you choose your heroes?
I paid attention to the diversity of music recordings, eras, generations, but also angles. We approach feminine desire in sound with Janis Joplin, and “body positivism” with Beth Ditto. I wanted to pay my respects to the women who worked for gender equality in the late 60s as well as our contemporaries like Caroline Loeb (airing tonight) or Christine & The Queens.
This show is the subject of a decline in the comics genre…
Exactly the same. The book covers several scenarios of the series, providing further information and highlighting other figures. The series only takes 3 minutes. In the context of a book, there are fewer format restrictions.
Music Queens will be at Arte on Monday, June 5th at 20:50
