How did you prepare to embody this historical figure?
Indian Amarteifo: I was familiar with the Shonda Rhimes series and knew that Queen Charlotte would not be a documentary, although there are actually two characters. But just to understand who he was, to understand the period, I had to do my research. Queen Charlotte and King III. I spoke with historians who gave a lot of information about how George lived in Kew Gardens, west London. It’s these everyday, mundane little things that history books often fail to describe and are essential to the creation of a character. What do they do when no one is around? What do they like to eat?
Has your performance been influenced by that of Golda Rosheuvel, who plays the former Queen Charlotte? Bridgerton Chronicles ?
I met Golda during rehearsals. It was categorical: I should have created my own Charlotte, certainly not trying to imitate her. It was so nice and reassuring to hear because it gave me complete freedom to create my own version of the character. I think there are similar elements in our performances because we both knew very well who he was.
Bridgerton Chronicles It’s also famous for its sex scenes. How did you experience yours at La Reine Charlotte?
Corey Mylchreest (young King George) and I were closely supervised by the intimacy coordinators on set. We were in good hands, and the unrest quickly dissipated as we began to grapple with these passages. These are scenes that are choreographed or designed as stunts. Too technical, no room for improvisation.
