ESPN has parted ways with MLB reporter Marly Rivera after a heated argument with fellow reporter Ivón Gaete.
According to USA Today, the sports network said in a statement that Rivera “no longer works here.”
Rivera’s social media accounts have been disabled and her bio is unavailable on ESPN’s website, which redirects users to an error page.
The New York Post reported that Rivera and Gaete attempted to interview New York Yankees player Aaron Judge on April 18. Rivera claimed she had previously scheduled an interview with Judge, but Gaete ignored her. During the altercation, Rivera threw an expletive that began with the letter “c” and was caught on video.
“I take full responsibility for what I said that I shouldn’t have done,” Rivera said. “There were mitigating circumstances, but that in no way excuses my actions.”
Rivera says she’s had disagreements with MLB’s vice president of communications, who happens to be married to Gaete, over the years covering MLB.
“I am a pro with an excellent baseball reputation, and I truly believe that I am singled out from a group of individuals with whom I have a long history of professional disagreements,” she added.
Rivera, who has covered the Yankees and MLB in general for ESPN and ESPN Deportes, said she apologized to Gaete for the offense but did not accept it.
