British Oscar nominee Lesley Manville has criticized violence on screen, particularly against women.
Manville, who stars in the Amazon Prime spy thriller citadelsaid the UK Guardian newspaper, she had no intention of watching such a program herself: “I can’t see any violence. I don’t watch anything.”
(Manville added here that she hasn’t seen a final clip of the show and isn’t sure of the full extent of the violence.)
She continued:
“It annoys me. I think this is really bad news. People are talking about it game of thrones I never saw it. It is also quite violent towards women. I really don’t want to see it.
“I am a woman first. Being a woman is a political position. You have to understand what’s going on, the risks, what you’re dealing with.”
In the interview, Manville expressed her belief that depictions of violence against women on screen have lagged behind other signs of progress, including better pay, more visibility for older actresses and better treatment in light of the #MeToo movement.
“It’s like we’re doing all the work here and while our attention is on it, they’re undermining it over there. Well wait. It was not a compromise.
“You have to keep fighting. It has been a slow struggle for women for hundreds of years to get to where they are today. It’s incredible how far we still have to go.”
Manville was previously nominated for an Oscar for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson ghost wire and plays the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, in Netflix’s latest series The crown.
