Jean-Marc Genereux (Mask Singer): "How I wish I was on the jury!"

Were you ready for your first show?

Yes, because I’ve never sang before. I set the bar not high, but at my knees. (Laughs) I really had a lot of fun and gave my all. I’m a competitor, but my two opponents, Zèbre and Phoenix, were very, very good. There is no shame in going out after such beautiful sounds.

You are now in Canada. Did you see the show?

Yes friends sent me a video… Very strange! The lama is an entity in itself, somewhat separated from me. But it’s me there! I want to pinch myself a little. I tell myself: “Ha? Was it me who did this?“.

How did you experience keeping your participation confidential?

You should be able to experience these emotions in a closed circuit. Only my wife and son knew this. It’s weird to walk around the streets of Paris with a mask! I leave my hotel, cross three streets, there is a car waiting for me. I feel like I’m going on an armed robbery! They are serious, they are at work so that our identity does not leak. Even my contracts were under another name! It’s no joke, but that’s the point of the game.

after 11 seasons dance with the stars As a member of the jury, this time you replaced a candidate in TF1…

I sprinkled sprinkles! I asked candidates to put themselves in danger by doing something they’ve never done before. Singing on stage was exactly the same for me. I can delete this from my list! I already had a lot of respect for the greats who danced and sang like Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson. But now, my respect is immeasurable! How do they manage to harmonize the steps and the song? Maybe the next step will be to make a music hall or a musical! (laughs)

How were the singing lessons?

We coached from afar because I was in Quebec where I choreographed the movie. the dancing detective. Later I worked in Malta and traveled to France to do sessions at a studio where Johnny Hallyday and Michel Sardou were recording… Yet I’m not even a singing baby, I’m a fetus!

Looks like I have a slightly stunning voice! (Laughs) But to be honest, I thought I could beat the inspectors a bit with my wits by singing. They asked each other questions in English. But when I did the Roch Voisine song in French, Kev Adams noticed the accent. Some still noticed my course of action, but I was overwhelmed with happiness as I read the comments on social networks to see that people were happy that I had joined this adventure.

Other than singing in English, did you have any other strategies to cover your tracks?

First, I wore ten-centimeter heel pads to guide them because I’m not the tallest. And I didn’t dance at 1000%. But there are reflexes there that let go… You put me on Elvis’ music, sure and sure I can’t even stop my hip! They were gone, I said to them:Calm down ! Calm down !“. But it didn’t work.

It must be hard to dance in a llama costume…

Really! My vision was almost zero, I had exactly three millimeters of vision. My eyes were on the edges of the llama’s kick. I’m a dancer, I dance according to the radar. But in the suit it was about 40 degrees. It was not heavy to carry. During rehearsals, the stage was perfect for dancing, but during filming the stage turned into an ice rink! I told : “Ok, I’m on the Koh-Lanta of singing! What’s going on, will I eat a scorpion? Will they put it on my suit?“And even if the ground slips, you have to go all the way because we shoot in live conditions.

Would you like to join the jury? Mask Singer in a next season?

Yes ! Of course, obviously, it’s a kiff! You’re on the show! The production puts on great shows, all the crews are working like crazy. As for Camille Combal, she puts us at ease. This guy took the lead, he’s good at sneakers, everybody’s telling him. He guides us and asks us to give our best. He’s a professional at heart and that’s okay. Inspectors, I found them very good, they are helpful. Even Jean-Marc was almost polite! (Laughs) While listening to them, “Oh damn what would I like to be in their place“!
