In the 1960s, four children from Manhattan’s working-class Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, while having fun on the street, cause an accident. An old man nearly dies and the children are sent to a juvenile detention centre. There they are constantly beaten and raped by the guards. Two of the traumatized children after their release drown in violence and crime. Eleven years after their imprisonment, they take revenge by killing one of their tormentors in cold blood in a public place. Again as the target of a case, they will get help from their childhood friends, who are the victims of the former guard and who are respectively journalists and deputy prosecutors…
Adapted from an autobiographical book?
sleepers Based on the 1996 book of the same name and published in 1995, it was a real commercial success. In the cast of this realization of Barry Levinson we find the big names of the cinema: Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon or Dustin Hoffman. The novel, whose feature film is American Lorenzo Carcaterra, according to its author, is an autobiography. Moreover, one of the main characters bears his own name and surname and is played by Jason Patric. But the Church and School of the Sacred Heart of Jesus juvenile detention center protested the charges against him in the story, while the Manhattan prosecutor said there was no record of such a case in the city archives. But Lorenzo Carcaterra, who grew up well in Hell’s Kitchen, deliberately “changing dates“beside their name”place” and its protagonists to turn his personal story into fiction… No trace of the original case has been found to date.
