EXCLUSIVE: Peacock develops drama series Queen of the Streama premium adaptation of the Colombian telenovela by Caracol Television, La Reina del Flow. Jorge Reyes of Westbrook Studios and Universal Television will write the project. Singer and actress Becky G (good grief, Power Rangers) is in early negotiations to direct the series, Deadline knows.
Queen of the Stream is a revenge story/music drama about a young singer-songwriter named Yeimi – the role Becky G is in talks for – who rises to fame in the music world and finds unrequited love with the superstar offspring of a powerful family. But as she climbs to the top, dark secrets about Yeimi and the family she’s made her own are discovered, putting her on a collision course toward a showdown that could destroy them all.
The premise is described as “Count of Monte Cristo-like story against a background of Latin American music.”
The series is a co-production between Westbrook Studios and UTV. In addition to Reyes, Westbrook Studios Co-President, Head of Television Terence Carter and David Boorstein will executive produce on behalf of the production company along with Tucker Tooley and Jay Weisleder for Tucker Tooley Entertainment, Eli Shibley for Big Content, Paulette Bensussen and Darah Wagner for Boaz for wild sheep content by Erik Barmack and Lisette Osorio for Caracol Television.
Reyes was the writer/producer of the popular crime drama Queen of the South for the USA network. He was also the creator/co-executive producer of the Legal Dramedy Kevin Hill, with Taye Diggs and Christina Hendricks.
He began his writing career on Dick Wolf’s cop drama shelter new york, The paramedic drama directed by Aaron Spelling salvation 77, and the Showtime Original Series Resurrection Blvd. Reyes is currently developing a Fat Joe project with Kenya Barris on Showtime. He is represented by CAA, Zero Gravity Management and JTWAMM.
Queen of the Stream is the latest collaboration between Westbrook Studios, UTV and Peacock, who recently released the second season of the streamer’s breakthrough hit Call aira dramatic reinterpretation of the Will Smith series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Earlier this month, the series was picked up for a third season.
