Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who won an Oscar for his documentary Summer of Soul, embarked on his next directorial project: a remake of the Disney classic “The Aristocats.”
EW has confirmed that Questlove will direct, produce and oversee the music for the new film, which is billed as a “live-action hybrid reimagining.” Presumably, the new Aristocats will be similar to Disney’s recent adaptations, which mix animated animals like Lady and the Tramp with live actors.
It’s really no surprise that The Aristocats is getting the live-action treatment: Disney has been reviewing its entire catalog of animated movies for several years, and so far the studio has released live-action remakes of movies like Beauty and Beauty. Beast, Cinderella, The Lion King, Aladdin, Mulan and Dumbo. Soon, Halle Bailey will be showing a new version of The Little Mermaid, which will hit theaters on May 26.
The original movie, released in 1970, The Aristocats is a classic about mother cat Duchess and three kittens Berlioz, Marie and Toulouse working with stray cat Thomas O’Malley to find their way home.
Questlove is best known as the drummer and co-founder of The Roots. In 2021, he made his directorial debut with the documentary “Summer of Soul”, about the 1969 Harlem cultural festival. He’s no stranger to Disney animation projects, either, as he voices a character and is a music consultant on Pixar’s film. “Soul”. Aristocrats will be his first narrative film.
