In the footsteps of King Midas (France 5): Did the legendary monarch really exist?

With a touch of “golden”, this captivating film takes us in the footsteps of the legendary ruler.

a legendary king

Midas ruled in Phrygia, present-day Turkey. One day, Dionysus, the god of parties and wine, offers to grant him a wish. The ruler then demands that everything he touches turns into gold. But this power soon turns out to be harmful. The man can no longer fill his stomach and after his daughter embraces him, he turns into a golden statue. Midas begs the god to stop this spell. Dionysus then invites him to wash his hands in the waters of Pactolus…these waters immediately become auriferous.

land of abundance

In addition to its mining (gold, silver, etc.) and agricultural resources, Phrygia was an important trade crossroads between East and West. Thanks to its textile industry, the city had earned a reputation for excellence in the ancient world. All these riches made it a land of abundance.

a verified entity

A magnificent city was revealed during the excavations made in Gordion, the capital of the Phrygians, which was discovered in the 19th century. 18 kilometers away, an ancient Greek inscription evokes King Midas. Finally, the tomb of Gordias, the father of Midas and the founder of the city, was uncovered in a magnificent mound.
