What was the impetus for this new show? my first cabaret ?
Kamel Ouali : The urge is the little noises you hear behind me. My two kids made me want to go and see things, watching what’s being done for young audiences. There are great shows for your kids, less so for older sisters or parents, even though it’s always fun to see your kids doing great. That’s why I wanted to make a show for everyone who unites the family. To make sure the little ones like teenagers, parents like grandparents have a good time. The best compliment I’ve ever heard came from a little girl who said to me: “It’s the best drama I’ve ever seen and also my mom wasn’t bored once“.
You are the father of two small children. Have they tested and approved the show or are they still too small?
They’re still small, but to my surprise, they stuck to the front for a while, just enjoying what they saw.
How do you find the right formula to grab the attention of the little ones?
This kind of show is a first for me, I started without really knowing what to seduce. I benefited from a very rich staging, a lot of things happening, very interactive. I have always loved to surround myself with dancers, singers, actors, circus performers. I added magic there. Cabaret is where you feel most free.
Isn’t it very complicated to manage the creation of a new show and his life as a father?
Especially since I do so many other things! But it’s not harder for those with a more traditional job. You just have to be organized. It’s true that I don’t have a special weekend, but I spend all my time with them whenever I’m available. An almost selfish pleasure!
Did fatherhood give you extra energy?
The most important thing to me is that they see what a passionate, working father is. I often take them with me, I want them to grow up knowing they have the choice to do whatever job they want that will make them want to wake up every morning.
How do you see the return? Star Academy ?
To be honest, I didn’t watch the show, I’m not in front of my TV at the time. On the other hand, I think the rebirth of the series is great. I know Yanis Marshall very well, he worked with me for several years. I am the only teacher who has appeared in every season of the show except the last season. We assembled these hundreds of paintings and worked in haste. I wanted to surprise every week. I hope they maintain continuity.
