The 2023 Billboard Music Awards will take place on Sunday, November 19. It brings the Dick Clark Productions-produced awards show, which ran in early December during Fox’s original 1990-2006 incarnation, back to late fall. The Billboard Music Awards were moved to May when they were revived in 2011 and aired for seven years on ABC and most recently for six years on NBC.
NBC chose not to continue the show as it focused on expanding its own People’s Choice Awards franchise. Acquired from NBCU sibling E! In 2017, the ceremony will air on NBC starting in 2021, and the network just announced a music spinoff, the People’s Choice Country Awards, that will debut in September.
CBS also dropped the ACM Awards in 2021 to focus on the company’s CMT Music Awards following its merger with ViacomCBS. The latter migrated to CBS the following year, while the DCP-produced ACM Awards found a new home on Prime Video.
A new network is being sought for the Billboard Music Awards, which DCP has produced since 2014. DCP is also in the process of finding an outlet for another awards show it produced for NBC, the Golden Globes.
Billboard Music Award winners are determined by performance on the Billboard charts, which for decades have been a guide to ranking the popularity of artists, songs and albums.
This year’s awards are based on music consumption as reflected on the Billboard charts from November 19, 2022 through October 21, 2023. Winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including streaming audio and video, album and song sales, radio airplay and tours.
Olivia Rodrigo, Ye and Drake were the big winners at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs. The ceremony was broadcast live on NBC on May 15 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Deadline’s parent company, PMC, owns Billboard and also co-owns DCP through a joint venture.
