South Asian women in entertainment unite to celebrate major award nominees and plan for action

A celebration of the achievements of South Asian women was held Saturday in downtown Los Angeles, encouraging a community to move forward in entertainment and create “space for mainstream victory.”

The luncheon, sponsored by Product of Culture and South Asian Women in Entertainment, was intended to raise awareness and provide networking opportunities. The South Asian community faces specific problems, including disregard for religious and societal norms and traditions, transphobia, and sometimes government violations in their home countries.

According to promoters, South Asian women make up only 0.3% of television and film shows.

“It’s important to build these spaces and celebrate the triumphs of the largest global diaspora,” said Product of Culture CEO Archana Misra Jain. Room for regular profits. The cornerstone of Product of Culture is the fusion of content, commerce and culture while representing more than a quarter of the world’s population.”

Bhavani G. Rao, the founder of South Asian Women in Entertainment (SAWIE) and writer/producer, echoed this view. “The importance of these events is that they provide an opportunity to bring together all parts of our South Asian community. If we know each other, we can work together and build a bigger network to make a difference and continue the way forward.”

“I am currently working on a film that will finally go beyond stereotypes and include South Asians as they really are around us,” added Lena Khan, a 2023 Oscar nominee strangers at the gate. “We are not looking for a large audience, but we are honing our talent, supporting each other and creating our own events, roles and portraits with our industry allies. We have fun together, honestly, and don’t fight over the same leftovers. We bake the cookies!”
