The place of the century Notre-Dame de Paris (Arte): secrets of a resurrection

This three-part documentary focuses on the work of archaeologists, architects, engineers and historians involved in the rebuilding of the cathedral.

Oise limestone

One of the safes collapsed in the fire of 2019. Among the debris were found the hard limestone blocks that formed it. These 70 keystones (corner cut stones used in the construction of the vaults) have been digitized and modeled in 3D. Thanks to the software, we were able to manipulate each element of this safe like a jigsaw puzzle. Given their deterioration, only 15 of them can be reused. We found the extraction sites in Oise and new blocks were cut.

ironwork

This is one of the greatest discoveries of this site: the stone blocks that make up Notre-Dame’s walls were joined by iron staples 40 to 50 cm long, weighing 2 to 3 kg.

A frame of young trees

Contrary to popular belief, the wood of the famous 13th-century frame was not made of centuries-old oaks with broad and thick trunks, but of young, tall and slender specimens, more resilient and more durable.

Notre-Dame de Paris, the venue of the century, will be at Arte on Saturday, March 4th at 20:50
