Harvey Weinstein case: former producer sentenced to 16 more years for rape

Former producer Harvey Weinstein, who helped spark the #MeToo movement, was sentenced on Thursday for another 16 years for sex crimes.

A Los Angeles judge sentenced Harvey Weinstein to 16 years in prison, who was convicted by a jury of raping and sexually assaulting an Italian actress and model in 2013.

Thursday’s sentencing deepens the downfall of the more than 20-year-old film mogul that 70-year-old Harvey Weinstein still has to serve for a similar conviction in New York in 2020.

Referring directly to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lisa Lench, Harvey Weinstein said, “I claim to be innocent. I have never raped or sexually assaulted Jane Doe 1 (her identity is kept confidential in the editor’s note).”

Convicted of rape, Weinstein cried while speaking in the courtroom.

A few minutes earlier, he had told the judge about the pain he felt after being attacked by the producer.

“Before that night I was a very happy and confident woman. I respected myself and my relationship with God.”said the woman. “I was excited about my future. Everything changed after he brutally attacked me. There’s not enough jail time to make up for the damage.”

The judge handed down the sentence on Thursday after Weinstein’s lawyers refused to request a new hearing.

In December, jurors found the producer guilty of one rape and two sexual assaults against the woman, who dramatically and poignantly described her uninvited arrival in her hotel room at the start of the October trial. entry and attack.

The jury freed Weinstein from an even longer sentence by acquitting Weinstein of sexual assault by a massage therapist and not ruling on charges involving two other women.
