Great escapes (France 5): Exploring Occitanie from farm to farm

This Occitan road trip from Tarn to Gers via the Hautes-Pyrénées takes us to meet innovative growers and enthusiasts in the company of Ismaël Khelifa.

Strass and sequins in the meadow!

A cabaret in the middle of a ranch is not trivial! This was the crazy idea David Caumette had in 2015 to save the family farm from bankruptcy. At Folies Fermières, pleasure is on the plate: “With good local produce,” says the peasant artist from Cantal, whose story inspired Jean-Pierre Améris, the director of his feature film Les Folies fermières (released in 2021).

life in water

Marion Sarle became a landless gardener ten years ago. A technical and economic model that allows plants to grow without soil, only in water. Advantage? Grow plants anywhere! He grows hundreds of different varieties (ancient vegetables, aromatic herbs and edible flowers) in his “water-grown vegetable garden”. So many quality products that enchant the gastronomic restaurants of the region…

heart of tractors

The passion of Benoît Jouclard, curator of the Bouriane Agricultural Machinery Museum in Salviac (Lot), is vintage machines. Tracing the rich history of mechanization in our countryside, this site houses an extraordinary collection of 350 machines. Among them are vintage models of tractors from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, which the master of the place loved to fix and drive.

Buffalo love!

“From the moment I saw a buffalo, I knew I was going to raise this animal. For me it was buffalo or nothing!” Lucile Martin has been raising forty women on her estate in Gers for four years. She makes her own mozzarella with uniquely fine milk called white gold. And this has nothing to envy about Italian cheeses!

soap farmers

There is only one step from the South Pacific Ocean to the countryside of Gers… the step that Cécile and Manu Guichard took nearly a decade ago. In Biran, a former diving instructor in the Fiji Islands and her husband set up an ecological farm where they raise donkeys from the Pyrenees to produce milk for cosmetic purposes.
