Judge Matthew And The People’s Court end their long TV runs, both victims of the challenging market conditions in the daytime syndication landscape.

Judge Matthew has been on the air for 24 seasons and won a 2018 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program. It was the first court appearance with an African-American lawyer to win.

Judge Greg Mathis is the longest-serving black male television host and the second longest-serving judge in court television history, behind Judith Sheindlin.

The news follows the recent announcement that another staple for the day, Dr Phil, ending after 21 seasons. It was a transformative year in the increasingly challenging landscape of daytime syndication that saw stalwarts The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Wendy Williams Show, Maury, Dr. we How The right ones also ends in the last 12 months.

The People’s Court won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program, the most wins for a courtroom show in that category, in 2014, 2015, 2020 and 2021, and received 12 nominations.

The People’s Court is the first court show to use binding arbitration, the format was introduced to the genre in 1981, and is the first popular, long-running reality series in the legal genre.

The show is the longest running traditional court show and the second longest running court show overall, with a total of 39 seasons as of the 2022-23 television year divorce court by 1 season.

Judge Marilyn Milian is the longest serving judge on the show, having presided over 22 years since 2001. The original series ran from 1981 to 1993 with judge Joseph Wapner. The current show was revived in 1997.
