Police: Active shooter at Michigan State University, shots fired at multiple locations, injuries reported

Michigan State University Police said gunfire was fired at multiple locations on campus this evening and a lone gunman is believed to be at large on foot. The Associated Press, The New York Times and The Washington Post reported injuries related to the event.

Students were ordered to shelter in place and university authorities said “all campus activities will be canceled for 48 hours, including athletics, classes and all campus-related activities.” DO NOT come to campus tomorrow.”

An initial statement by campus police said shots were fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. A subsequent post by University Police on Twitter said: “Another shooting reported in IM East. The police respond. There are several reports of injuries.”

The victims were taken to the hospital, police said.

The good news is that authorities were able to evacuate Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall, MSU Union and Berkey Hall.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer repeated the call to students and others on campus to protect themselves where they belong, then demanded, “Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight.”

Starting at 7:15 PM PT, CNN and MSNBC HD began covering the news.
