John Cleese “won’t be doing as much physical comedy” in the Fawlty Towers reboot.

John Cleese may be planning a remake of his comedy classic Fawlty Towers, but the new version of the show will not include all the elements familiar to the millions of fans of the original show.

Cleese will co-write the new version with his daughter Camilla, and she revealed that Basil Fawlty, her father’s totemic character, will not be involved in the kind of physical comedy where he knocks over an Austin 1100 with a branch.

Camilla told Britain’s Sun newspaper: “He’s not going to do as many crazy physical, comedic things as he used to, but you never know what you’re going to see him do.”

Fans and critics have been talking since the announcement that the 1970s sitcom was getting a new series, 44 years after it ended with just 12 half-hour episodes on the bus.

They fear none of the jokes will be as successful in 2023, but Camilla told the paper the revival will “adorn” the tone of the original, adding:

“There will be jokes that are a bit sharp, but we don’t want to get anyone, we don’t hate people. This is not the basis. People are a bit touchy these days, to say the least.

“We mostly joke about the characters in the show and their quirks.”

She had no idea when the show would debut, revealing that it could take anywhere from three months to three years.

Cleese previously said the show, which originally aired on the BBC, would not return there for the relaunch.
