Continue tonight Saturday night liveModerator Michael B. Jordan and Bowen Yang entered the speaker booth street fighter 6 – the latest in Capcom’s fighting video game franchise.
The sketch, titled “Video Game Session,” opens with the director, played by Andrew Dismukes, opening the day’s session with voice actors Trace (Jordan) and Danny (Yang).
“Excited to be here, thanks,” says Trace – and Danny adds, “Excited to be on board. Wow!”
“Thanks for stopping by at the last minute, Danny,” says the director. “Our last actor, Frank, left due to creative differences – and because I slept with his wife.”
“actor‘ the assistant director, played by Marcello Hernandez, shrugs.
“I know,” said the director. “So, Trace, you play Ken, a former US National Fighting Champion…”
“I’m in my element,” Trace notes. “I’ve been serving for years.”
“…And Danny,” said the director, “you’re a martial artist in search of true power, Ryu.”
“Wow! Love,” Danny replied.
“Okay, for this first take, we’re going to record you both,” asked the director, “Take hits, land hits, that kind of thing.”
When called to action, Trace makes the kind of noise you’d expect street fighter (“Oo! Eh! Huh! Huh-yah!”) with Danny forging his own path. “Whoa! Whoa! Awoo! Hooray! How!” he shouted.
The director then calls Cut and asks Danny for more growls in his voice after reminding him that his character is “struggling” and “in pain”.
Somehow, though, Danny doesn’t get what’s being asked of him, and the director rephrases his request as work with a “more aggressive, animalistic” quality.
“Mmm. Yeah, boss,” says Danny, who then makes animal noises – and gets Trace to do the same.
“Doesn’t match what he’s doing!” pleads the director.
“Oh good, he’s just a great scene partner,” says Trace. “So you know…”
“Thanks,” Danny said to Trace. “And I just wrote down your note. You said make animals.
“Yes, but I’ve already said a lot,” replied the director.
“Well, I have auditory recency bias, so you can’t tell me that,” Danny replied. “I can sue you.”
The director tries to move on, asking his actors to come up with lines to fit the play, with Danny improvising things like “Hey, I like your necklace”! and “Look, kindness wins!”
The director eventually asks Danny to give his character a “straighter” quality, with Danny using phrases like “Hey, Brother Ken”. Your biceps look huge!
At that moment, Frank (Mikey Day) bursts into the room and reminds the director that he said he would kill him for sleeping with his wife. Luckily, Danny and Trace are on hand to defend him, using their goofy video game sound effects as they take down the intruder.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” said the director. “You two just saved my life.”
“No sir,” said Danny. “Ken and Ryu just saved your life.”
