‘The Resident’: How the Fox drama ended its sixth (and possibly final) season

In one of the strangest coincidences of the 2022-23 TV season, two medical dramas parted ways on Tuesday – New Amsterdam on NBC and the resident on fox. It was a series finale for the former; While creator/showrunner David Schulner and executive producer Peter Horton didn’t think their five-year-old series should be canceled, they had plenty of time to plan a hopeful ending for Ryan Eggold’s protagonists.

After six seasons on Fox, the resident has not been canceled yet. But Tuesday’s finale, titled “All Hands On Deck,” had all the makings of a final farewell. DR. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) got his happy ending through his love for Dr. Explain to Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas). Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) spoke openly about his drug addiction and was allowed to keep his job at the Chastain Memorial after dating the young Dr. Sammy saved. Bell (Bruce Greenwood).

And the hospital retains its full funding after dr. Devi (Anuja Joshi) Governor Betz (Stephen Culp) has been cured of a bad heart (and some strange dirt in his gut). Devi becomes the attending physician after Bell realizes that the symptoms of his MS make it impossible to perform his duties. He gives her the proverbial keys — or in this case, a stethoscope — while his wife, Kit Voss (Jane Leaves), stands by.

And how does Devi celebrate it? At the suggestion of dr. Pravesh (Manish Dayal) to accept! Many contacts in this hospital. Anyway, the episode ends with Hawkins and Sutton kissing before viewers get a (last?) look at Atlanta’s fictional hospital.

Deadline hears those expectations for a seventh season the resident is quite slim, especially since the 9-1-1 Franchise is much more valuable to Fox. Even before this season, the show was only renewed at 11:00.

the resident was created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi.
